Pentagon's Tradewinds speeds AI buys with 5-minute vendor videos

TL;DR

  • Pentagon's Tradewinds program lets vendors pitch AI tools in five-minute videos; if accepted, buyers can skip competition and award contracts in under a week.
  • This year's solicitations call for pitches that "enhance force lethality" and agents for "kill chain execution"; OpenAI, Anthropic, and Google are listed participants.
  • The Tradewinds Solutions Marketplace is gated to .gov and .mil users and has facilitated over $3.26 billion in contract awards as of February 2026.

The Pentagon lets defense contractors pitch AI tools in five-minute videos, and if a panel accepts the pitch, government buyers can skip competitive bidding and award a contract in under a week. Wired reports that the program, Tradewinds, is run by the Chief Digital and AI Office, and that this year's solicitations call for pitches that "enhance force lethality" and AI-enabled agents that help with what it calls "kill chain execution."

The marketplace is gated. Only users with a .gov or .mil email address can browse the pitch-video library, which the Pentagon says supports more than 120 DoD organizations and has facilitated over $3.26 billion in contract awards as of February 2026.

OpenAI, Anthropic, and Google are listed as Tradewinds participants. The CDAO has separately split $600 million in agentic-AI work across Anthropic, Google, and xAI, following a $200 million award to OpenAI.

The procurement push lines up with a memo signed on 9 January 2026 by Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth, directing the department to become an "AI-first" warfighting force. One of its named Pace-Setting Projects, Agent Network, is described as "unleashing AI agent development and experimentation for AI-enabled battle management and decision support, from campaign planning to kill chain execution."
