Physical Intelligence CEO denies Anthropic acquisition rumor

The story ricocheting around AI Twitter this week is that Anthropic was buying Physical Intelligence, the robot foundation-model startup. That specific claim, as laid out by TechCrunch, is not what happened. It started with a weekend post on X from tech blogger Robert Scoble, and it prompted Physical Intelligence's CEO, Karol Hausman, to tell employees via Slack that the reports were not true, reportedly with a GIF of a character from 'The Office' shaking her head no.

The more interesting version of the same story is the one The Information published: Anthropic and Physical Intelligence actually did hold acquisition talks this spring, and those talks did not produce a deal. So the viral post was wrong about the tense but right that something had happened.

Why any of this matters comes down to who ends up owning the brain layer of general-purpose robotics. Physical Intelligence has raised more than a billion dollars, was reportedly in talks for another billion round at an $11 billion valuation, and its π0.5 model is apparently among the more widely used robot brains in research labs. If Anthropic ends up with a controlling stake in that stack, it moves from a text-and-code model company to a robotics platform company on a single check.

The complication, and it is a real one, is that OpenAI is already a shareholder in Physical Intelligence. That is not just an awkward cap table. Early investors in hot AI startups routinely negotiate information rights or a right of first refusal over a sale to a competitor, and if OpenAI holds either, it can effectively slow or match an Anthropic bid. Take the specifics as reported, not settled, because the actual terms of OpenAI's stake are not public.

What the reporting does not give you is why the spring talks collapsed, whether it was price, control, or exactly those investor rights, or whether either side is still at the table quietly. The forward-looking read is that Anthropic clearly wants a robotics story of its own, and if it cannot buy the leading foundation-model team, expect it to keep shopping or to start building in-house.
