Premji, Claypond Lead India's $760M 2026 AI Funding Push

Funding ai-business

TL;DR

  • Indian family offices and angel investors have put about $760 million into AI companies so far in 2026, nearly 50% more than last year, per Tracxn data cited by Bloomberg.
  • At least six homegrown Indian AI companies have crossed $1 billion valuations alongside this capital push.
  • Premji Invest and Ranjan Pai's Claypond Capital are the two most active backers, with recent checks into Pramaana Labs, Emergent and Flam.

Indian family offices and angel investors have poured about $760 million into AI companies so far in 2026, nearly 50% more than last year, Bloomberg reported citing data provider Tracxn Technologies. In the process, "at least six homegrown companies have amassed valuations of more than $1 billion."

Two cap tables keep showing the same names. Premji Invest, the investment firm associated with Azim Premji's family, joined a $27 million round for AI verification platform Pramaana Labs, founded by graduates of the Indian Institute of Technology Madras, in June. Claypond Capital, the family office of Manipal Group chairman Ranjan Pai, backed coding platform Emergent's $130 million round in July and content startup Flam's $40 million round in September.

The pitch is patient capital. Family offices argue AI needs longer holding periods than mainstream venture or private equity will tolerate, and that their operator experience behind the checks is itself hard to replicate. Premji Invest's broader portfolio already stretches to Databricks and Canva alongside generative AI names Spotdraft and Writer.
