Princeton's Meredith Martin previews MLA's AI framework

Meredith Martin, Professor of English and Faculty Director of Princeton's Center for Digital Humanities, is leading a lunchtime faculty discussion at Frist 330 on a framework recently developed by the Modern Language Association's AI and Research Working Group. Lunch is served at noon, with the program running from 12:15 to 1 p.m., per the CDH listing.

The session, the listing says, invites attendees to "explore its implications for teaching and learning and work through several of the case studies and scenarios it presents." The framework itself is structured around three areas: AI literacy, human-centered expertise, and responsibility and ethics. It is aimed at faculty members, administrators, editors, and publishers as common ground for dialogue, consensus-building, and policy creation.

The working group's approach starts by applying rigorous source criticism to the AI tool itself: its functionality, design, architecture, training data, versioning, reliability, limitations, and how its outputs can be verified or audited. Martin is a member of the MLA working group behind the document.
