Shopify launches Canvas, chat-driven store builder on Sidekick

TL;DR

  • Shopify launched Canvas on October 1, 2026, a desktop-only design surface where merchants chat with its Sidekick AI agent to build stores.
  • Ben Sehl, Shopify's Director of Product, said merchants can now build fully customized stores in approximately twenty minutes using Canvas.
  • Canvas launches without third-party themes, app blocks and extensions, markets, translations, rollouts or theme updates — all promised over time.

Shopify on October 1 launched Canvas, a desktop-only design surface where merchants chat with its Sidekick AI agent and watch the store rebuild itself in real time. The TechCrunch report says the output is live code, not a mockup: "this isn't a static preview, but the real code behind their store being rendered." Merchants can still click individual elements for manual edits.

Ben Sehl, Shopify's Director of Product, pointed to his own history to frame the shift. "When I built Kotn 12 years ago, I knew how to code and it still took me two weeks to get a rough store working," Sehl told Unite.ai, adding that merchants can now stand up fully customized stores in approximately twenty minutes. Shopify said Sidekick made over 25 million theme edits during the first half of 2026, and the company rebuilt its theme architecture so the agent could edit store structure more cleanly.

The launch exclusion list is long. Third-party themes, app blocks and extensions, markets, translations, rollouts and theme updates are all absent, and Canvas-edited themes no longer receive automatic theme updates. The surface requires staff with edit-code permission on plans that include theme customization capability.

Shopify now joins Wix, Squarespace, Webflow and Framer in treating a chat prompt as the default path to a storefront.
