Tesla Q3 Operating Income Drops 56% as AI Spend Jumps 69%

TL;DR

  • Tesla reported Q3 revenue of $28.05 billion flat year-over-year with non-GAAP EPS of $0.48, beating the $0.45 consensus.
  • Operating income fell 56% to $718 million as R&D jumped 69% to $2.76 billion on 'Super Intelligence,' Optimus, and Cybercab.
  • Unsupervised FSD for owners slipped to Q2 2027 and only inside Robotaxi zones; the fleet logged nearly 2 million unsupervised miles.

Tesla's Q3 operating income fell 56% to $718 million even as revenue held flat at $28.05 billion, with non-GAAP earnings of $0.48 beating the $0.45 consensus. The gap sits in a line Tesla now puts at the top of its spending stack: what it labels 'Super Intelligence,' alongside Optimus and the Cybercab.

Electrek reported that 'Research and development alone jumped 69% to $2.76 billion as Tesla spends on what it now calls Super Intelligence (SI), Optimus, and the Cybercab.' Operating expenses rose 39% to $4.78 billion. Capital spending more than doubled to $4.73 billion, and free cash flow fell to $1.53 billion from $3.99 billion a year earlier. Operating margin compressed to 2.6% from 5.8%.

Auto gross margin excluding credits came in at 18.1%, up from 16.3% in Q2. The margin recovery is real, but spending on AI and Optimus grew faster than gross profit. Tesla attributed flat sales to supply, saying 'battery availability continued to be the limiting factor in increasing auto volumes in the quarter,' with the company flagging 'the largest backlog for our passenger vehicles in four years.'

The autonomy line slipped. Tesla pushed unsupervised FSD for owners to Q2 2027, and only inside Robotaxi zones. The Robotaxi fleet itself passed nearly 2 million cumulative unsupervised miles by quarter end, a month after Cybercab joined the Austin fleet. FSD active subscriptions reached 1.74 million, up 67%.

Capital guidance is the near-term tell. Tesla has deployed $13.01 billion of a 'more than $25 billion' full-year capex target through three quarters, with most of the gap still to clear in Q4. Our Tesla tracker has carried 15 stories on the company over the past 90 days, including yesterday's disclosure that the SpaceX and Tesla boards formed independent panels to weigh a merger.
