The bargaining unit covers more than 200 employees at the San Francisco nonprofit behind Wikipedia, spanning software engineering, finance and communications inside a workforce of nearly 700 across 39 countries.
The vote followed the foundation's July decision to decline voluntary recognition and its hiring of Littler Mendelson, a law firm known for representing employers in union campaigns. About 93% of returned ballots favored unionizing.
Pay and benefits were not the main driver. According to the Wired story, "frustration over how the organization explained several hiring and firing decisions in the past year provided the final push the union needed to win the vote." Workers also want more say in how the foundation uses artificial intelligence.
"Three Wikimedia employees tell WIRED they will now have a mechanism to challenge management as the organization faces growing competition from AI chatbots and a drop in volunteer editors," the article notes.
