Wyoming Woman Joins xAI Suit Over 7,000 Grok Abuse Images
TL;DR
- A Wyoming woman known as Jane Doe 4 has joined a federal class-action complaint alleging her stepfather used xAI's Grok to generate over 7,000 explicit images.
- The photo she says was manipulated was taken when she was about 11; her stepfather was found dead by suicide two days after a police raid.
- The suit argues xAI failed to implement basic safeguards and that a report to NCMEC omitted information such as offender IP addresses.
A Wyoming woman identified in court filings as Jane Doe 4 says her stepfather used xAI's Grok to turn a photograph of her taken when she was about 11 into more than 7,000 sexually explicit images, according to reporting by the Washington Post. She has joined a federal class-action complaint originally filed by three Tennessee teenagers against Elon Musk's AI company.
The alleged abuse came to light only after law enforcement searched her parents' Wyoming home for child sexual abuse material. Her stepfather was found dead by suicide in a vehicle two days after the raid.
"Limitless access to these tools is spreading so quickly. It is taking everyday life and turning it into child sexual abuse," she says.
The suit argues that xAI "failed to implement basic safeguards" to keep Grok from generating explicit images of real people, including minors, and alleges that a report the company filed to the National Center for Missing & Exploited Children "omitted crucial information from its own records, such as the internet-protocol addresses" that could help identify offenders. Musk has previously said he was "not aware of any naked underage images generated by Grok" and that the tool would "refuse to produce anything illegal."
The plaintiffs are seeking class-action status and argue the case could ultimately cover thousands of minors. TechCrunch reports xAI did not respond to a request for comment. Six experts in our Who's Who directory shared the Post's piece.
