YC's Garry Tan Says 'Do Nothing' on Chinese AI Distillation

Garry Tan, the CEO of Y Combinator, told CNBC he would do nothing to stop Chinese labs from distilling American frontier models.

At YC's annual Demo Day, Tan pushed back on both the distillation crackdown and the extinction-risk framing driving much of Washington's current AI debate. "We need to be focused on science fact, not science fiction," he told CNBC. "I saw 'Terminator 2' also. It's a great movie."

His preferred settlement is a market one. Tan wants regulators to leave distillation alone and let an equilibrium form between open-weight releases and frontier systems, as long as the frontier keeps a price premium that funds the business model. "This is actually the ideal case. You want open weight models to give people freedom and access," he said.

The timing is pointed. Tan's remarks came after the NSA, FBI and Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency named six Chinese companies in a joint advisory alleging industrial-scale distillation of American models. Anthropic has accused Moonshot AI, DeepSeek and MiniMax of the practice; OpenAI believes DeepSeek's V3 and R1 architectures were distilled from its own GPT-4 and GPT-4o.

Where Tan does want attention is closer to the ground. "If there was a breach and a coordinated attempt by agents to take over our infrastructure, what do we do about it?" he asked.

His anti-doom line lands the same week President Trump publicly dismissed AI extinction risk and said the US leads China by roughly a year in the race.
