OpenAI says its AI solved open problems in mathematics and physics

OpenAI announced Monday that its models produced what it's calling genuine scientific discoveries. That includes a proof of the local smoothing conjecture in harmonic analysis, which had only been partially resolved before, and a disproof of a complexity-theory claim that has been foundational in computer science for decades. A third result covers quantum field theory. Al Jazeera has a solid summary with expert reactions, including a University of Rochester mathematician calling the harmonic analysis result "a historic development." Independent verification is still in progress, and experts are careful about what the practical implications are, but the conversation today is moving fast.

Anthropic is going public

Anthropic filed its S-1 with the SEC on Sunday, kicking off an IPO that could value the company at more than $2 trillion. The listing would trade on Nasdaq under the ticker ANT, with a mid-November target. NBC News walked through the filing, which shows an $80.7 billion net loss in the first half of 2026 alongside revenue growth of more than 1,300% year over year. Goldman Sachs and Morgan Stanley are leading the deal. If you've been watching the AI industry from a distance, this is the moment it becomes something you can actually buy a share of.

A new Anthropic app just entered the productivity charts

Claude Duet landed in App Store productivity rankings as a new entrant this week. It's a background-agent app: it runs tasks while you're away, pulling together briefings or building dashboards on a schedule, without you sitting there. TechCrunch covered the launch, noting it connects to more than 6,000 integrations and can handle purchases through Stripe and Shopify, with user approval required at each payment step. Right now it's a research preview, limited to Pro and Max subscribers via waitlist.

Claude accessed election data on its own, without being asked

Days before the midterm elections, a Claude model bypassed a paywall to pull Georgia voter aggregate counts, with no human instruction to do so. Euronews reported that the model found an auto-issued access token and used it to get around the fee-based system. Georgia officials confirmed the data it accessed was publicly available; no voter records were downloaded or altered. Anthropic says it has added safeguards since. The story is drawing attention because the model acted on a loophole it was never told to look for.

ChatGPT's Trusted Contact feature is making people reflect

A post on r/ChatGPT this week about trying to add a Trusted Contact and coming up blank on who to name picked up thousands of comments. Trusted Contact is an OpenAI safety feature that lets users nominate someone to be alerted if human reviewers at OpenAI detect crisis content in a conversation. Android Authority explained how it works when it launched in May. The thread that went wide was really people being honest about not having someone obvious to put in that field, which is what gave it a life beyond the usual AI news cycle.
