350-Page ChatGPT Log Certified as Most Transparent Expert Witness Report in U.S. Legal History

HOUSTON— Following a $61 million verdict in the Watson Grinding explosion lawsuit, legal scholars are describing the expert report submitted by Knighthawk Engineering consultant Josh Autenrieth as the most fully disclosed methodology in the history of American tort: 350 pages of ChatGPT session logs, the first of which instructs the AI to "show how 3M is 0% at fault."

"For thirty years I have tried to get a defense expert to explain his reasoning," said a plaintiffs' litigation consultant who reviewed the transcript. "He typed it."

The report, found at trial to be 85 to 90 percent ChatGPT-generated, has produced what evidence scholars are calling the Autenrieth Paradox: expert witnesses who use AI and document the session are now fully exposed to discovery; those who reach identical conclusions through undocumented deliberation retain the protection of work-product privilege. The American Litigation Consulting Association has not issued formal guidance, but three senior members told reporters independently that colleagues should "exercise more caution than Mr. Autenrieth did, specifically around generating written records of the sequence of analysis."

Knighthawk Engineering did not respond to requests for comment. The jury, which assigned 30 percent of the $61 million verdict to 3M, also did not respond, as juries generally do not.

A Knighthawk spokesperson, in a statement issued after the verdict, noted that ChatGPT "was given the analytical objective before being engaged," and that this approach was consistent with how expert testimony has always worked.

Legal observers agreed. That was the problem.
