AI Startup Lays Off Four Employees to Hit 14-Person Threshold Before Series B Pitch

SAN FRANCISCO — AI developer-tools startup Cogsworth Labs announced Tuesday it had reduced its headcount from 18 to 14 by eliminating its legal compliance, human resources, and facilities functions, citing investor feedback that anything above 15 employees "signals overhead that the model should be absorbing."

The move was described by three prospective Series B investors as evidence of "disciplined product thinking." None of the three had reviewed the company's financials. Two confirmed they were using the employee count, inverted, as their primary quality signal.

"Fourteen is the new two," said a partner at a venture firm that asked not to be identified. "At fifteen you're a company. At fourteen you're a product. At eighteen you have an all-hands meeting, which is a red flag."

Cogsworth sells an AI tool that automates internal business communication. The four departing employees were notified using it. The company reported an average notification time of 1.3 seconds and a satisfaction score of 4.6 out of 5, based on automated post-notification surveys sent to the employees immediately after they were notified.

The remaining 14 consist of two co-founders, six engineers, a model fine-tuning lead, three go-to-market staff, and one additional hire retained to keep the count even, which investors said had no statistical significance but "reads better in a deck."

Cogsworth's Series B is expected to close at a $420 million valuation. The company has 11 customers and describes itself as profitable on an adjusted basis that excludes software costs, salaries, and the $420 million it intends to raise.

Among those laid off was the engineer who designed the notification system. Reached for comment via the notification system, she said it performed well.

"No issues," she said. "The handoff summary was thorough."
