NEW YORK — Leopold Aschenbrenner, former OpenAI researcher and author of the 165,000-word 2024 essay series Situational Awareness: The Decade Ahead — which argued that artificial general intelligence would transform civilization within years and that failure to navigate the transition carefully could end it — this week invited investors to commit fresh capital to Situational Awareness, his $20 billion hedge fund, following what an investor letter described as 'sharp losses' in the recent AI-stock correction.

The fund remains up 439% net through June on leveraged positions in Oracle, AMD, Nebius, Sharon AI, and Bloom Energy, with roughly $8.7 billion in put options held against the broader market.

Aschenbrenner has argued publicly that AI development is moving faster than any institution can safely manage, that oversight mechanisms are structurally inadequate, and that the gap between frontier capability and human understanding is widening by the quarter. The fund's most recent prospectus describes this environment as 'a persistent alpha-generating condition.'

The investor letter does not specify a redemption mechanism in the event of civilizational disruption but notes that performance fees accrue monthly, which Aschenbrenner has called 'responsive to the current pace of development.'

The fund's risk disclosure, reviewed by this outlet, lists both 'failure to achieve AGI' and 'achievement of AGI' as material risk factors, noting that each scenario 'presents distinct opportunities for the fund's thesis.'
