Global AI Industrial Revolution Paused Pending Delivery of Large Metal Box

SAN JOSE—The global AI infrastructure buildout — a multitrillion-dollar enterprise backed by the world's largest technology companies and expected to fundamentally reshape civilization within the decade — is currently awaiting delivery of large, oil-cooled steel cylinders, industry analysts confirmed Tuesday.

Power transformers, the electromagnetic devices connecting data centers to electrical grids, now carry manufacturer lead times of four to five years, with domestic U.S. prices up roughly 79 percent, according to a Financial Times analysis. Approximately half of the twelve gigawatts of U.S. data center capacity planned for 2026 is at risk of delay or cancellation pending equipment whose core design has not materially changed since the Eisenhower administration.

The constraint has emerged as the single most significant bottleneck in an industry that has otherwise demonstrated a capacity to spend at virtually unlimited scale. AI hyperscalers have collectively committed hundreds of billions of dollars to new campuses over the past eighteen months. None of that capital can be applied to the transformer queue, which operates on a first-come, first-served basis established before most of the companies in question existed.

Transformer manufacturers, asked whether they planned to use artificial intelligence to accelerate production timelines, said they did not.

"We make them the way we always have," said a spokesperson for one major supplier, reached by telephone after a brief hold. "We appreciate everyone's interest."
