Make vs n8n: Choose by Ownership, Recovery and Running Cost
Compare Make and n8n using the same handoff, failure tests and maintenance budget. A practical decision guide without invented benchmark scores.
In this guide
Choose between Make and n8n by deciding who will run the workflow after its first successful demonstration. Make's visual scenario history is relevant to teams that want to inspect a run and its data. n8n's hosting choices are relevant to teams that need to decide where the system operates and who maintains it. Neither distinction proves that one will be better for your particular process.
Use one shared job
Compare both with a reviewed intake-to-task handoff: receive an approved record, validate its owner, create a destination task and save the resulting identifier. Keep the same inputs and expected outcomes. Testing an easy example in one product and a complex AI agent in the other tells you little about their relative fit.
| Decision | What to inspect in Make | What to inspect in n8n |
|---|---|---|
| Daily ownership | Can the operator explain the scenario and inspect bundles? | Can the maintainer explain the workflow and its credentials? |
| Operating model | Required service plan and account controls | Cloud versus self-hosted responsibilities and edition |
| Failure recovery | Find the failed step and inspect previous outputs | Locate execution state and safely retry the incomplete work |
| Budget | Observed credits and operations for the trial | Plan usage plus hosting and maintenance where applicable |
Break the handoff deliberately
Submit a duplicate source event. Remove the owner from another record. Simulate the destination being temporarily unavailable. Finally, test a partial failure after the task has been created but before the source receives its destination ID. The recovery must find the existing task instead of creating another one.
Ask a colleague who did not build the workflow to locate the error and explain the recovery. Record the time and assistance required. That exercise reveals whether the apparent ease of construction carries over to daily operation.
Compare total cost at your volume
Count accepted outcomes rather than raw executions. Include failed attempts, retries, external model calls and the time spent maintaining credentials and logic. For self-hosting, include updates, backups and restoration responsibility. Check the current plans for the collaboration, retention and security controls you actually need.
A cheaper entry plan is not necessarily cheaper for a workflow with frequent branching or repeated retries. Conversely, a larger platform may be unnecessary when an existing native integration already implements the exact handoff.
A conditional recommendation
Shortlist Make when the operator can maintain its scenario model and its managed service fits your requirements. Shortlist n8n when your team wants its workflow and hosting choices and has a named maintainer. Keep the native integration when it meets the same acceptance tests with less work.
This is a documentation-based decision framework, not a performance benchmark. The separate Make and n8n assessments provide purchasing pilots and operating considerations.
