FT: Tencent Moves Closer to Launching AI Agent for WeChat's 1.4 Billion Chinese Users

The Financial Times reported June 1 that Tencent plans to begin small-group testing of a native AI agent embedded in WeChat before a phased rollout, with the agent capable of autonomously booking rides, ordering food, and executing multi-step payments across WeChat's mini-program ecosystem. The initiative represents a direct challenge to OpenAI-aligned agents in the world's most-used super-app, where Tencent's payment rails and 1.4 billion monthly active users give it structural advantages no Western platform can replicate.
