OpenAI, Anthropic, Google, and Microsoft CEOs Jointly Urge Congress to Mandate Synthetic DNA Screening — Warn AI Is Eroding Bioweapons Barriers

Sam Altman, Dario Amodei, Demis Hassabis, and Mustafa Suleyman co-signed a joint open letter to Congress calling for mandatory screening of all synthetic DNA and RNA orders, arguing that AI is rapidly eroding the technical knowledge barriers that historically prevented bad actors from weaponizing biological material. The letter demands that DNA synthesizers vet sequences against dangerous-pathogen databases, verify customer identities, and maintain comprehensive purchase records; it was co-organized by the Foundation for American Innovation and the Institute for Progress. The push dovetails with a bipartisan Senate bill from Cotton and Klobuchar introduced earlier this year requiring exactly these controls.
