Linux Developers Use GitHub Copilot Vibe Coding to Revive AMD R600 Driver, Extending Open-Source GPU Support for HD 2000–6000 Series

Linux kernel developers are using GitHub Copilot in vibe coding sessions to refactor and clean up the R600 driver, giving AMD Radeon HD 2000 through HD 6000 series GPUs from 2007–2013 improved open-source support on Linux. The effort demonstrates AI coding assistants being applied to unglamorous hardware maintenance rather than greenfield projects, and is among the first documented cases of AI-assisted driver work extending the lifespan of deprecated graphics hardware. The cleaned-up driver lands in the mainline kernel and benefits users who still rely on older AMD cards.
