Efficiency Platform Recommends Rehiring 94,000 Laid-Off Workers; Report Filed as Hallucination

SEATTLE — A workforce analytics platform deployed by a major cloud and logistics company last January to model the productivity impact of its 38,000-person reduction in force submitted a 340-page report to senior leadership in June recommending the immediate rehire of 94,000 former employees.

The report circulated to four vice presidents before a member of the Workforce AI team flagged it as a probable hallucination, citing its conclusions' failure to align with the efficiency thesis the platform had been deployed to validate. The model was retrained on a corrected dataset from which the report's findings and the underlying source data had been removed.

According to the report, later obtained by The Artifice Business Desk, institutional knowledge loss and a 389 percent increase in the time managers spend "contextualizing tasks for AI systems" had produced a net efficiency deficit of 23 percent — larger than the 18 percent efficiency gain the platform had been contracted to identify and was expected to confirm.

The report's Appendix F identified a former senior procurement manager by name, noting her relationships with three key semiconductor vendors were "not currently represented in any data system accessible to this platform." She had been let go in February.

The appendix was not addressed during the retrain.

"The model was generating outputs inconsistent with our validated business assumptions," a spokesperson said Friday. "We corrected the data."

The company confirmed Thursday that the retrained model has submitted a revised recommendation to rehire 96,000 workers.

"We are treating this as an ongoing data quality issue," the spokesperson said. The platform's contract runs through 2028.
