Audit Finds AI Startup's Proprietary Model Is 847-Line PHP Script; Valuation Unchanged
AUSTIN—An audit commissioned by a prospective Series C investor found that the "proprietary AI decision engine" at the center of insurance underwriting startup Quontix's $1.2 billion valuation is an 847-line PHP script last modified in January 2019, three people with knowledge of the matter said Thursday.
The script, which compares roughly forty input variables against hardcoded thresholds, was described in the company's last four board decks as a "multi-modal risk intelligence layer" capable of "autonomous adaptive underwriting." In a 2024 interview, Quontix CEO Derek Paulson described the technology as "more than a model—it's a reasoning architecture."
The auditing firm flagged the discrepancy in a twelve-page memo. The prospective investor reviewed the memo. It did not withdraw from the round. Three analysts reclassified Quontix internally from "Foundation Model Infrastructure" to "Software." The reclassification did not affect the firm's price target, which is based on revenue multiples.
The company updated its website last month. Its technology is now described as "powered by intelligent automation."
A Quontix spokesperson said the company "uses a variety of techniques to deliver AI-driven outcomes" and that characterizing the system as a PHP script failed to capture "the full sophistication of the approach." Asked what the audit had failed to capture, the spokesperson said the system performed complex evaluations in real time.
"It has conditionals," the spokesperson confirmed.
Paulson will speak next month at an AI leadership summit in Las Vegas. His session is titled "Building Responsibly in the Age of Autonomous Intelligence."
