Engineers Spared from AI-Replacement Layoffs Confirm They Are, Personally, AI-Native

SILICON VALLEY—Following the partial execution of an initiative to reduce department headcount by approximately 60 percent using artificial intelligence—a plan that completed its first scheduled wave before leadership elected not to pursue the second—the roughly 90 percent of engineers who retained their positions have independently arrived at the same professional self-assessment.

"I'm AI-native," said a software engineer who asked not to be named. "I'd say AI is pretty central to how I work." He has not changed how he works in three years. He has GitHub Copilot. It is enabled.

Of 14 engineers interviewed at companies that publicly announced AI-driven restructuring in the first half of this year, all 14 described themselves as AI-native within the first two minutes of conversation. Nine meant GitHub Copilot. Two said they used ChatGPT regularly, by which they meant occasionally. One had completed a LinkedIn Learning course on prompt engineering in March and described it, without evident irony, as a professional transformation.

The internal analyses that justified the original headcount targets—estimating that teams of three AI-native engineers could replace teams of twenty—were not disproven. They were, according to two people familiar with the matter, simply not tested before leadership elected to pause.

Job postings for three-person AI-native roles at the same seniority and salary band as the surviving employees' current positions remain active on company career pages.

A second reduction wave is scheduled at several firms for November. Three of the engineers, separately, mentioned that they were leaning into AI.
