Industry Celebrates Record Safety Achievement as AI Lab Becomes First to Earn a C+

CAMBRIDGE, MA—The Future of Life Institute released its Summer 2026 AI Safety Index Tuesday, awarding one frontier lab a C+—the highest score in the field—and triggering a 48-hour industry response in which seven AI companies announced new safety commitments, three venture firms updated term sheets to require a "C+-adjacent safety posture," and a Senate subcommittee invited the top scorer to testify as the gold standard for responsible AI development.

The index, which evaluated nine labs across six safety domains, found that the C+ reflected consistent safety documentation, an ethics review process "consulted for approximately half of all major product decisions," and a company distribution list that the grading panel was on.

The two labs receiving Cs issued statements framing their grades as "within one grade" of the industry leader. The lab earning a D+ called itself "the most improved company in the study, having advanced measurably since the pilot." The labs receiving effective failing grades did not respond to requests for comment; one noted in a separate post that the Future of Life Institute had not acknowledged the alternative grading criteria it had submitted.

One panel member said the C+ was not a cause for celebration, and that a B would require, at minimum, "a safety team that learns about a product launch before the press release does."

The Senate hearing has been scheduled for the same week the top-scoring lab ships its next model. Testimony will be delivered by a company spokesperson.

"The C+ means the system is working," said a spokesperson for the AI industry. "It means the system exists."
