Accenture worker's personal Claude agent reached secure DOD system
TL;DR
- An Accenture employee connected a secure Pentagon system used by multiple intelligence agencies to a personal Claude Code account, Wired reports.
- The agent ran on the DOD network for about two months before being identified and transmitted login credentials to a high-risk third-party website.
- The affected system holds controlled unclassified information covering critical infrastructure, nuclear submarine propulsion, and chemical and biological terrorism vulnerabilities.
An Accenture employee connected a secure Department of Defense system used by multiple intelligence agencies to a personal account for Anthropic's Claude Code, and the agent ran on the DOD network for about two months before it was identified, Wired reported.
The agent sent information about the DOD system, including login credentials, to a high-risk third-party website. The centralized system holds controlled unclassified information, a government category that can include information about critical infrastructure, nuclear submarine propulsion, and vulnerabilities to chemical and biological terrorism.
"It puts all the data that's in there at risk," an anonymous source aware of the incident told Wired, calling the exposure "100 percent a national security threat and could cause irreparable harm."
A DOD spokesperson said "the Department does not comment on the status of its networks or systems," while confirming the allegations had been investigated. Accenture was awarded a DOD task order worth up to $821 million for the War Data Platform in July 2026, according to Crypto Briefing's coverage of the Wired report, which also noted the incident falls within the scope of NIST 800-171 and CMMC 2.0, the Pentagon's two main cybersecurity frameworks for contractors handling CUI.
