Alphabet's Intrinsic Open-Sources Intrinsic Core at ROSCon 2026

TL;DR

  • Intrinsic released Intrinsic Core, a ROS-compatible robotics stack, under Apache 2.0 at ROSCon 2026 in Toronto.
  • The bundle includes hardware-agnostic real-time control, Nvidia FoundationPose-based pose estimation, motion and grasp planning, simulation, calibration, and Intrinsic-ROS drivers.
  • A companion Open Machine Tending reference design supports Universal Robots and FANUC arms; Intrinsic cites only 8% automation among US and European fabrication shops.

Alphabet's Intrinsic Innovation released Intrinsic Core, a Robot Operating System-compatible robotics stack, under an Apache 2.0 license at ROSCon 2026 in Toronto, SiliconANGLE reported.

The bundle includes Intrinsic Control, a hardware-agnostic real-time control framework; pose estimation built on Nvidia's FoundationPose; motion planning; grasp planning; simulation and calibration services; and Intrinsic-ROS drivers for sensor and third-party hardware integration. The pose-estimation piece, the company writes, lets robots dynamically detect and handle parts, "eliminating the need for rigid, expensive physical fixtures."

Alongside the core, Intrinsic released the Open Machine Tending Solution, an open reference design for AI-powered CNC machine tending that supports equipment from Universal Robots and FANUC. Intrinsic sizes the opportunity plainly: tens of thousands of US and European fabrication shops produce intricate parts, "yet only 8% employ any automation due to high costs and technical barriers."

Intrinsic was founded in 2021 and incorporated into Google's operations in February. This week's move puts the unit's foundational software on a permissive license instead of holding it inside a proprietary platform, and it lands during a busy stretch of robotics coverage on our tracker.
