Anthropic Adds IREN to $530B Data-Center Lease Scramble

TL;DR

  • The Information reports Anthropic has signed an unannounced multiyear cloud deal with Australia-listed miner IREN, adding to the lab's leasing sprint.
  • Analysts estimate switching on a 245 MW site one month early would add more than $1.3bn in revenue, explaining the pressure on partners.
  • Anthropic's capacity race increasingly depends on current and former bitcoin miners such as Hut 8, TeraWulf, IREN and Nscale.

Anthropic has quietly signed a multiyear cloud deal with miner IREN, The Information reported, the latest tranche in roughly $530bn of data-center leases the Claude maker is now racing to switch on.

Ann Davis Vaughan's newsletter runs the per-site math and finds the revenue clock is ticking in weeks, not quarters. "Bringing the site's 245 MW of usable capacity online one month early would add $1.3bn+ in revenue," the piece says, laying out why Anthropic is leaning on partners to accelerate construction. The IREN pact itself had not been disclosed: "People familiar with the relationship say Anthropic also has an unannounced multiyear cloud deal with IREN," according to the report.

That ties Anthropic's roadmap unusually tightly to a cohort of mining operators. The sprint "increasingly depends on current and former bitcoin miners such as Hut 8, TeraWulf, IREN and Nscale," Vaughan writes, naming companies that hold scarce grid connections at former smelter and hydrogen sites. The agreement joins previously disclosed Anthropic arrangements with AWS, Google and more than a dozen other providers.

It arrives in the same week AI Weekly covered Anthropic's $1.25B-per-month SpaceX compute deal, part of a stream of infrastructure stories feeding our Anthropic tracker. The reporting does not disclose the dollar value or term of the IREN agreement.
