Apple lays off 200+ across Vision Pro, Siri, software teams

Apple has eliminated more than 200 jobs across its Vision Pro, Siri, and software engineering groups, 9to5Mac reported on Aug 21, citing a Bloomberg account of the reorganization. Roughly 100 of the cuts fell inside the Vision Pro group, where Apple is "largely shutting down a Vision Pro team focused on gaming" and scaling back the unit producing Immersive Video, though the company says it will still "produce a smaller number of videos in-house."

The other 100-odd positions came out of Siri and software, tied to the launch of "Siri AI" and its revamped technical architecture. The "Intelligent Systems Experience team" was also caught in the reshuffle as Apple reorganizes the groups building its AI-powered features.

Apple framed the moves as a rebalancing rather than a retrenchment. "While we will create new roles as part of this change, it will also impact a limited number of existing roles," the company said in a statement, adding that it is "committed to supporting them throughout their transition, including opportunities to apply for other roles at Apple." The stated purpose, per the same statement, is "to evolve our business to deliver the best experiences for our users."

The direction is clearer from what Apple is spending less on. A next Vision Pro model is being discussed internally for release "as early as the end of 2028," while the immersive-video and gaming work that anchored the first headset's pitch is the part being trimmed.
