Apple's Siri AI Ships Sept 14 on iOS 27, Trained on Gemini

"The next version of iOS will arrive on Monday, September 14, Apple announced today at its fall iPhone event," Engadget reports, with iPadOS 27, watchOS 27, and macOS 27 Golden Gate landing the same day. The headline feature is Siri AI, the long-delayed overhaul.

The partnership underneath is the surprise. "Apple partnered with Google to use the company's Gemini models in the training of the algorithms that power Siri AI," the story reports. By Engadget's account, Apple is not shipping Gemini at runtime; it used Gemini to train the assistant.

Support goes back only to 2023's iPhone 15 Pro, "meaning just three-and-a-half generations of iPhones." iPad needs an M1 chip or newer. And within the supported set there is a further split: "more recent models, starting with last year's iPhone 17, 17 Pro Max and iPhone Air, will offer a better experience. They take advantage of a more powerful on-device model that enables more accurate speech recognition and dictation."

On the Mac, "Apple has integrated the assistant directly into the software Spotlight utility." That quietly reframes Spotlight as the primary Siri surface on macOS 27 Golden Gate. Outside of the assistant, iOS 27 and iPadOS 27 carry tweaks to Liquid Glass and a new set of child safety features.

Engadget's own testing was cautiously positive: Siri AI "was actually capable of answering complex questions and carrying out multi-step prompts." On our Google tracker, Gemini has surfaced in dozens of stories across the past three months, most of them API or product news; being named as Apple's training partner for a flagship assistant is a different kind of validation. Siri also lands in a busy week for assistant launches; Meta's Muse agent shipped two days earlier. Reviews on September 14 will show whether Apple caught up.
