Drex paper ships four open decision models, 183ms per query
TL;DR
- Drex Max scores 67.52 on Decision Index 0.4.1 and responds in 183 ms per request, against 3.5 seconds for Claude Opus 5.5 in the authors' reporting.
- Four open models ship: Drex DLM (8B), v1.5 (9B), v2.0 (35B MoE with 3B active), and the 27B dense Drex Max with an image encoder.
- On Decision Bench v4's 1,071 decisions, Drex Max hits 94.0% text accuracy while Claude Opus 5.5 still edges it at 95.6%.
Drex Max, the top model in a new family of four open "decision models," scores 67.52 on Decision Index 0.4.1 and returns an answer in 183 milliseconds per request, according to a paper posted on Hugging Face titled "Towards Foundation Decision Models: Drex." The models skip autoregressive decoding entirely; users supply a state and a set of options, and the model outputs a probability distribution over those options directly, what the authors call "discriminative inference instead of autoregressive decoding."
The latency gap is the loudest claim. Drex Max responds in 183 ms per request against 2.0 seconds for GPT-6 Sol and 3.5 seconds for Claude Opus 5.5 in the authors' reporting, roughly 11x and 19x faster. Accuracy is more mixed. On Decision Bench v4's 1,071 decisions, Drex Max hits 94.0% on text-only input while Claude Opus 5.5 still edges it at 95.6%. On the public Decision Index 0.4.1 the model takes the top spot among decision models at 67.52, against 60.70 for Jev 1.14.0; Claude and GPT are not reported on that benchmark.
The family spans four backbones: an 8B gated-DeltaNet model (Drex DLM), a 9B hybrid (v1.5), a 35B sparse MoE with 3B active parameters (v2.0), and the 27B dense Drex Max with an image encoder. Calibration is uneven. Drex v2.0 reports a 1.37% expected calibration error at its deployed temperature. Drex Max sits at 3.61% at deployed temperature, dropping to 1.35% only after Decision Index-tuned rescaling. The paper frames the approach as "faster, more cost-effective, and more stable than LLM-based approaches."
Weights ship under Nace.AI's Open RAIL-M for the three larger models and CC BY-NC 4.0 for Drex DLM, with Apache-2.0 for the inference code. It sits alongside the 355 open-source stories tracked here in the last ninety days.
