China's Ministry of Industry and Information Technology set a 2030 target of 9,800 eflops of intelligent computing capacity in a 2026-2030 five-year plan, the South China Morning Post reported. It pairs the target with "3.8 trillion yuan (US$532 billion) in cumulative information infrastructure investment over the 2026-2030 period."
That is more than a quadrupling of the current base. MIIT figures put national intelligent computing capacity at 2,185 eflops by the end of June, "up 177 per cent from a year earlier," and the National Data Administration had it near 2,450 eflops a month later.
The plan calls for the "orderly deployment" of computing clusters containing either 10,000 graphics processing cards or "100,000 or more cards, alongside inference computing facilities tailored to different applications." Fifty-two intelligent computing centres of the 10,000-card tier are already built.
The programme extends the "East Data, West Computing" project launched in 2022, which routes workloads from eastern demand centres to western regions with cheaper land and energy across eight national hubs and ten data-centre clusters. It lands in a busy week of China AI infrastructure news: Alibaba Cloud and Cambricon joined the PyTorch Foundation as platinum members the same day.
