Chrome Autofill Taps Gemini to Mine Gmail for Flights, Orders

TL;DR

  • Chrome's enhanced autofill now uses Gemini to pull flight confirmations, order numbers, tracking information and membership IDs from a user's Gmail when filling forms.
  • The option surfaces in form fields as 'Suggested by Gemini', is opt-in through Chrome settings, and Google says sensitive data is encrypted.
  • The rollout is US-only to start, covering desktop and the Gemini in Chrome apps on iOS and Android.

Chrome's enhanced autofill will now reach into a user's Gmail to pull flight confirmations, order numbers, tracking information, membership IDs, addresses, phone numbers and credit card numbers when filling web forms, Google said on October 28.

The option surfaces in form fields as a "Suggested by Gemini" prompt after Chrome scans the inbox for relevant details, TechCrunch reported. It is opt-in through Chrome settings, part of Google's Personal Intelligence initiative, and "Sensitive data is encrypted," per Google.

Rollout is US-only to start, covering desktop plus the Gemini in Chrome apps on iOS and Android. It lands the same week Google scaled AI Mode ads to 10 countries, another plank in the push to make Gemini the connective tissue between the company's consumer products.

TechCrunch likened the behavior to Apple's long-standing verification-code autofill, calling it "reminiscent of one of Apple's most appreciated features: the ability to automatically detect verification codes."
