Gartner: $3.5T AI Infrastructure Spend Faces Impairment by 2030
TL;DR
- Gartner says more than $3.5T of planned AI infrastructure spending is exposed to impairment by the end of 2030.
- AI data centers would need $8.5T in cumulative revenue to cover capex and a 12% ROIC, but Gartner forecasts no more than $3.6T.
- Over 80% of neocloud providers are projected to cease independent operations by 2030, while hyperscalers' diversified revenues cushion them.
Gartner says more than $3.5 trillion of planned AI infrastructure spending is "exposed to impairment" by the end of 2030, in a press release from the research firm.
The gap is arithmetic. To cover announced capital spending, financing costs and a 12% return on invested capital, AI data center owners would need $8.5 trillion in cumulative revenue through 2030. Gartner forecasts no more than $3.6 trillion in enterprise and consumer AI revenue attributable to those data centers over the same window.
"In 2026, AI providers are expected to spend nearly $1 trillion on AI infrastructure, and are forecast to invest an additional $6 trillion between 2027 and 2030," said Will Sommer, Senior Director Analyst at Gartner. "However, our research indicates that enterprise and consumer AI revenue will be insufficient to support profitable returns on all planned AI capital expenditures during this period."
The blow lands unevenly. Gartner expects more than 80% of neocloud providers, the GPU-as-a-service tier below the hyperscalers, to cease independent operations by 2030. Hyperscalers get a cushion from what Gartner called "massive and highly diversified revenue sources" supporting continued AI investment regardless of sector-specific returns. Push the trajectory out further and the asset-value exposure grows: more than $4 trillion at risk of write-down through 2032, under the Gartner report "Prepare for AI Market Consolidation."
"Not everyone is in trouble," Sommer said. "Some will outperform, some will underperform, and some will have to exit the market."
The warning arrives into a run of enthusiastic private capital in the same stack: Modal just closed a $750M Series D at a $15.75B valuation, one of 458 AI infrastructure stories we've tracked over the last 90 days.
