Google turned on early access to a Model Context Protocol server for Google Home on Tuesday, letting third-party AI agents including Claude, ChatGPT, Hermes, OpenClaw and Google's own Antigravity read camera history, monitor smart-home activity and control connected devices through natural language, TechCrunch reported.
Access is limited to Google Home Premium Advanced subscribers in the United States, a "$20-per-month subscription tier that provides features like longer event-based video history," descriptive notifications, video search and daily summaries. The company said the MCP will roll out "starting today and continuing over the coming weeks" to that group, and "wouldn't comment on if or when the MCP would roll out more broadly, such as to other subscription tiers or markets."
Setup is not one click. A user has to create a Google Cloud project, configure it for Home MCP, hand the resulting configuration to their chosen agent, and grant permissions when prompted. Once wired up, agents can act on any device in the Google Home ecosystem, from Nest doorbells and thermostats to "Works with Google Home" and Matter gear such as smart bulbs.
