Google Launches Dreambeans in India in 13 Local Languages
TL;DR
- Google launched Dreambeans in India with support for 13 local languages, pulling story content from Calendar, Gemini, Gmail, Photos, Search, and YouTube.
- US downloads of the June-launched app fell 84% month over month to about 5,500 in October, from roughly 29,000 in the first 30 days.
- Rivals set a sharply higher bar: Meta's Muse logged 7.4 million first-month downloads and ChatGPT 2.8 million.
Google has launched Dreambeans in India, bringing its proactive AI story app to 13 local languages including Hindi, Punjabi, Tamil, Telugu, and Bengali, TechCrunch reported. The expansion lands as US downloads fell 84% month over month to about 5,500 in October.
Dreambeans, introduced in June and opened to all eligible US users 18 and older in September, pulls from Calendar, Gemini, Gmail, Photos, Search, and YouTube to generate illustrated stories "without requiring them to enter a prompt." Google recently added a feature that uses its Veo video-generation model to animate images in select stories.
The India numbers matter against a thin US scoreboard. Dreambeans recorded nearly 55,000 downloads in the U.S. since its June debut, with roughly 29,000 of those landing in the first 30 days after general availability. That sits well below Meta's Muse, which TechCrunch pegs at 7.4 million first-month downloads, and ChatGPT at 2.8 million. Google product manager Gozde Oznur said "India stood out for its high overlap of users across Gemini, Gmail, and Google Photos," framing the country as Dreambeans' first international market.
One friction is visible in a market defined by code-switching: users can select only one language at a time for their generated stories. The expansion is Google's latest consumer AI push in a run of launches we have tracked over the past three months at AI Weekly.
