Google Renames NotebookLM to Gemini Notebook, Adds Code Execution

Google is retiring the NotebookLM name. As of July 16, 2026, Google's announcement calls it Gemini Notebook, and the product now ships with what Google describes as a secure cloud computer inside every notebook, an environment where the model can write and run code directly against the sources a user has uploaded.

The rebrand matters less than the plumbing. Josh Woodward, VP of Google Labs, Gemini app & AI Studio, framed the update as the same standalone research tool now doing more across the Google ecosystem, with full synchronization between the standalone Gemini Notebook and notebooks that live inside the Gemini app. Notebooks are also headed to AI Mode in Google Search, according to the post. NotebookLM is being pulled out of its own corner and stitched into the main Gemini surface while keeping its own front door.

The code execution piece is what actually changes the product's ceiling. Grounded analysis over a user's own uploaded material has been the tool's differentiator, and letting the model write and run code against those sources pushes it from a summarizer into something closer to a lightweight analyst. That capability is live today for Google AI Ultra users and for Workspace business customers with AI Ultra Access and AI Expanded Access, with all Pro users on the web due to get it in the coming weeks.

The honest caveat is that Google's post is a launch pitch, not a benchmark. It does not name the model powering the code execution, spell out data-handling limits for Workspace customers, or explain how sync behaves when the Gemini app and standalone notebook are edited in parallel. What it does give you is scale: Google says more than 30 million individuals and more than 600,000 organizations already use the product, which is what turns a rename into a distribution event and puts real competitive pressure on other research-notebook and lightweight-analysis tools.
