Google Sets Sept 4 Cutoff to Replace Assistant With Gemini

Google has finally put a date on something that had been drifting for the better part of a year. According to 9to5Google, Assistant will begin coming off Android phones, tablets, and Wear OS watches on September 4, 2026, and the rollout is expected to take a few weeks to reach every user.

The wording is what makes this one worth flagging. After removal lands, users will "no longer be able to use or switch back to Google Assistant on your phone, tablet, or paired devices." There is no legacy toggle, no rollback path. Gemini becomes the assistant experience on Android, and it is the only one on offer.

The scope shows where Google is willing to force the transition and where it is holding back. Assistant also goes away on paired headphones, and on Android Auto when it is being projected from a phone. The carve-out is cars with Google Built-in, which the company says will keep Assistant working beyond September 4, 2026. Google TV, Google Home speakers, and smart displays are not part of this wave, and the reporting notes Gemini is still rolling out on those.

Why this matters if you have anything wired to Assistant on the phone or the wrist: your Gemini migration is no longer optional and the fallback window is closing. Routines, custom voice flows, and third-party integrations that lean on specific Assistant intents have a hard deadline to prove they still work under the new assistant.

The honest caveat is what the reporting does not tell you. There is no detail on whether Routines migrate automatically, which Wear OS models get full Gemini support versus a degraded voice mode, or exactly when the TV and speaker platforms follow. Google's own timeline here is worth remembering; the deprecation was originally scheduled for late 2025 and slipped to 2026, so take the "few weeks" rollout window as intent rather than a promise.

For developers building on Gemini, the flip side is a captive Android install base with no fallback assistant to hedge against. For Alexa, Siri, and Bixby, a forced migration is exactly the moment a frustrated user is most likely to shop around.
