Brockman: OpenAI Q3 annualized revenue grew 70% after rough H1

TL;DR

  • OpenAI president Greg Brockman called Q1 and Q2 of 2026 'pretty rough,' citing weak Codex traction while Anthropic pulled ahead on enterprise coding.
  • Q3 2026 brought 70% quarter-over-quarter growth in annualized revenue and a 'doubling' of the enterprise segment, Brockman said at WSJ Tech on Nov. 4.
  • Business customers now generate more than half of OpenAI's revenue, up from roughly 40% earlier in the year, with a 2027 IPO on the table.

OpenAI president Greg Brockman said the company's annualized revenue grew 70% in Q3 2026 and that enterprise sales now generate the majority of its revenue, after a first half he described as "pretty rough." He spoke at WSJ Tech on November 4, per the Wall Street Journal.

"Q1 was pretty rough. Q2 was pretty rough," Brockman told the audience, framing a stretch when Anthropic was pulling ahead on enterprise coding. His own diagnosis was blunt: "We had Codex, but no one was talking about it." The turnaround, he said, came from launches that landed in the second half — agentic coding tools, the frontier model GPT-5.6 Sol, and ChatGPT Work.

Brockman put the enterprise side's growth at "doubling" in Q3, with business customers now generating more than half of OpenAI's revenue, compared with roughly 40% earlier in the year. He also disclosed a partnership with JPMorgan Chase that "has not been previously announced," with the bank using Codex, OpenAI's coding agent. The news lands days after OpenAI hired Anthropic's Claude Code product lead Cat Wu, another move in the enterprise coding race.

Asked whether OpenAI would be ready to go public in 2027, Brockman said, "I think so," adding, "We want to list when the time is right" and that he has "never been more confident" in the business. OpenAI filed confidentially with the SEC in June.
