Reddit Rolls Out 'For You' Feed Alongside Following Tab
TL;DR
- Reddit's homepage now defaults to two tabs: 'For You' mixes joined communities with algorithmic recommendations, 'Following' shows subscribed communities only.
- The app remembers which tab a user last viewed; the global rollout is landing over the next few weeks.
- Reddit had tested the layout on web, iOS and Android since October 8, and some users have already pushed back.
Reddit on Wednesday announced a dual-feed homepage, with a "For You" tab mixing posts from a user's joined communities with algorithmic recommendations and a "Following" tab restricted to subscribed communities, TechCrunch reported. The new layout is rolling out globally over the next few weeks.
The company framed the shift modestly. "This new feed experience is a first step in helping drive discovery that leads to something novel and relevant," Reddit wrote in a blog post. The app will remember which tab a user last viewed and reopen there.
The change lines Reddit up with Instagram, X, Threads and Facebook, which already use algorithmic home feeds as the default surface. Reddit had been testing the layout on web, iOS and Android since October 8, and some users encountering it "have already expressed their frustration with the change," according to the TechCrunch report. Reddit says controls to hide posts and signal content preferences are planned.
