Reddit to shut RSS feeds Nov. 13, close public API by March 2027
TL;DR
- Reddit will stop supporting RSS feeds on November 13, 2026 and shut remaining public API access by March 2027, citing scraping and automated abuse.
- Reddit's 'other revenue' line, which carries its AI licensing deals, grew 24% year-over-year to $43 million in the second quarter of 2026.
- A $1 million App Migration Program pays $1,000 to each eligible app moving onto Reddit's Developer Platform; third-party apps and bots must register before January 12, 2027.
Reddit is shutting down RSS feeds on November 13, 2026 and closing its public API by March 2027, TechCrunch reported. The company blames bots.
"RSS has now become a common surface for large-scale scraping and automated abuse," Reddit said in its announcement, while conceding that "RSS has been a beloved part of the open web for a long time." Moderators who piped RSS into their own alerting are being pointed at a new Discord Relay Devvit app. For anyone using the feeds outside a community they moderate, Reddit admits "there's no replacement."
New public API requests stop October 31, 2026. Developers must register third-party apps and bots before January 12, 2027 to keep access, and remaining public endpoints close in March 2027. Social listening tools, research apps and AI assistants that pull Reddit data to answer questions all lose their free pipe unless they sign a commercial deal.
The money math behind the move sits in Reddit's own filings. In the second quarter of 2026, the company's "other revenue" line, the bucket that holds its AI licensing agreements, grew 24% year-over-year to $43 million. Reddit has data deals with Google and OpenAI, and is currently suing Anthropic and Perplexity. The two camps of AI companies are the ones that paid and the ones that didn't.
To cushion smaller developers, Reddit is offering a $1 million App Migration Program that pays $1,000 to each eligible app moving onto its Developer Platform, with free hosting and technical support thrown in. Two of the researchers we track had already pushed the story around by Wednesday.
