Reddit Ends RSS Nov 13, Closes Public API by March 2027

Reddit said it will end RSS feed support on November 13 and close public API access by March 2027, according to TechCrunch, pointing to scraping and automated traffic as the reason.

The company called RSS a "common surface for large-scale scraping and automated abuse" and said Old Reddit will be limited to logged-in moderators and users who have signed in through the classic interface in the last 90 days, citing "abusive scraping and automated traffic." Developers of third-party apps that want to keep tapping the API must register and be approved before January 12, 2027.

"We know RSS has been a beloved part of the open web for a long time, and we're grateful to everyone who used it to stay connected to Reddit," Reddit said in the post.

TechCrunch's Sarah Perez ties the timing to Reddit's licensing business. "Other revenue" beyond advertising rose 24% year over year to $43 million in the second quarter, largely from AI deals. As Perez writes, "The decision to kill Reddit's RSS feeds comes at a time when the site's treasure trove of user-generated content in its forums has become a profitable side business for the company in the form of AI licensing deals." AI assistants that reach into Reddit today, she notes, "will need commercial deals with Reddit for its data" once the public API is gone.

For moderators who piped subreddit activity into external tools through RSS, Reddit is pointing to a Discord Relay Devvit app and asking them to migrate workflows before the November 13 date.
