SemiAnalysis: Claude $200 Plan Offers ~5x OpenAI's API Value
TL;DR
- On Opus 5.5 vs GPT 6.1 Sol workloads, Anthropic's $200 Claude plan offers roughly 5x the API-equivalent value of OpenAI's $200 tier.
- OpenAI halved the $200 plan's value and layered a new $500 Pro tier; Anthropic raised Opus limits ~20% on Max and ~50% on Pro.
- Subscriptions are ~10% of Anthropic's revenue but over 40% of its inference compute, lowering blended revenue per megawatt by about $36M.
Anthropic's $200 Claude subscription delivers roughly five times the API-equivalent value of OpenAI's comparable $200 tier on mid-tier workloads, according to a new SemiAnalysis report by Andrew Megalaa, Max Kan and Dylan Patel. The authors put it bluntly: "Anthropic is an overwhelmingly better deal, offering ~5x the API-equivalent value" on Opus 5.5 versus GPT 6.1 Sol, the comparison they treat as the apples-to-apples mid-tier matchup.
The gap widened because OpenAI moved first and moved hard. SemiAnalysis says the company "picked the nuclear option of just immediately cutting to Fable-level limits across the board," halving the practical value of its $200 plan and layering a new $500 Pro tier above it. The $200 plan's "API-equivalent value for Sol class models actually decreased," the report notes. Subscription token limits on Sol did not move to compensate.
Anthropic has been quieter. With the Opus 5.5 price cut (input/output down 20%, cache reads down 60%), it lifted Max-tier Opus allowances about 20% and Pro-tier about 50%. Neither lab fully passed its API price cuts through to subscribers; Anthropic simply left more on the table.
The economics at the top of the stack are brutal. On SemiAnalysis's modeling, a user maxing out Opus 5.5 on the $200 plan runs at a -369% gross margin, versus roughly 1% for a user maxing out Fable 5.1. Drop utilization to a more realistic 20% and the numbers return to 6% and 80% respectively. "Despite being just 10% of overall revenue, subscriptions can take up over 40% of inference compute," the authors write, and they put the drag at roughly $36 million lower blended revenue per megawatt for Anthropic.
"It doesn't make sense to say a plan is worth $X in isolation," the report concludes; "you need to consider the full (plan, model, workload) tuple." The analysis lands in a week of operator-side Claude stories, including reports that Meta and Microsoft are scaling back staff use of Claude.
