TL;DR

  • Sony launched QSSR, an AI upscaling tier for the standard PS5, on October 1, 2026, built with AMD under Project Amethyst.
  • Marvel's Wolverine and Ghost of Yōtei shipped same-day patches as the first games to use QSSR.
  • PSSR remains Sony's PS5 Pro 'gold standard' while QSSR is being offered broadly to PlayStation developers.

Sony Interactive Entertainment unveiled Quick Spectral Super Resolution on October 1, 2026, a new AI upscaling tier for the standard PlayStation 5 that was built jointly with AMD under the Project Amethyst graphics collaboration, The Verge reported. Patches for Marvel's Wolverine and Ghost of Yōtei shipped the same day as the first titles to use the library, and Sony said QSSR would be offered to all PlayStation developers.

Daniel Craig, Principal Engineer of Graphics R&D at Sony Interactive Entertainment, described QSSR as resting on "two key innovations: a streamlined neural network architecture, and an implementation hand-tuned to maximize performance on the standard console." Jasmin Patry, Lead Rendering Engineer at Sucker Punch Productions, said the library delivered "a level of temporal stability that hasn't been possible on the PS5 console until now," while Insomniac's Mike Fitzgerald said it "adds more pixel-level clarity and stability to the game's environments."

PSSR, the earlier library that debuted with the PS5 Pro, remains what Sony called "the gold standard on PS5 Pro." Sony did not publish per-game resolution targets, frame-time deltas, or an SDK timeline for the wider developer rollout.
