Tencent released a new image model on the same day Alibaba's Apsara conference opened. Its shares gained more than 7% in Hong Kong.
The product, Hy Image 3.5 Preview, is being folded into the Yuanbao chatbot, film-editing tools and design tools, Bloomberg reported. Tencent tested it among hundreds of in-house designers and said outputs came in on par with ByteDance's Seedream 5.0 Pro and slightly ahead of Google's Nano Banana Pro and Alibaba's Qwen-Image-3.0 Pro. It published no external benchmark numbers.
Behind the launch are two former OpenAI hires. Yao Shunyu, Tencent's chief AI scientist, has said the company will "focus on product integration and solving real-world problems" rather than chase leaderboards. Tian Yonglong, an ex-OpenAI computer vision researcher, joined in July to lead vision-language work in the Hunyuan group.
Gary Tan of Allspring Global Investments told Bloomberg: "Some investors are drawing parallels between Tencent and Meta, particularly given WeChat's unique social ecosystem and its potential to support a personal AI assistant at scale."
The update is free on Design Agent Miora until October 7. Alibaba spent the same day rolling out its own Qwen roadmap and new chip at Apsara.
