TikTok Rolls Out AI Shopping Assistant and Buy Direct Checkout

TL;DR

  • TikTok announced a conversational Shopping Assistant and one-click Buy Direct checkout for the For You feed on October 5 at Advertising Week New York.
  • The features were built with Salesforce, Shopify, Shoplazza and Stripe under a program TikTok calls Agentic Commerce.
  • TikTok Shop generated roughly $15.8 billion in U.S. sales in 2025, about 18% of all U.S. social commerce.

TikTok used Advertising Week in New York to roll out a conversational Shopping Assistant and a one-click Buy Direct checkout wired into the For You feed, announced October 5. The Shopping Assistant answers product, sizing, shipping and availability questions and "understands context and remembers users' preferences and needs throughout the conversation," per the company's own description. Buy Direct lets a viewer purchase from a brand without leaving the video. TikTok groups both under what it calls Agentic Commerce.

"This really is about letting people purchase directly in-app from the brands that they know and love, so you don't have to leave the experience at all," David Kaufman, TikTok's global head of monetization product partnerships, said at the event, as TechCrunch reported.

The pitch is defensive as much as commercial. TechCrunch writes that TikTok built the assistant so users do not "turn to outside AI tools like OpenAI's ChatGPT" when they research what to buy. The framing lands the same day we tracked OpenAI beginning tests of visual ads inside ChatGPT image generation, which puts the two companies on a collision course for the moment a user decides to spend.

The features were built with Salesforce, Shopify, Shoplazza and Stripe, which supply the merchant and payment plumbing TikTok itself does not run. TikTok Shop generated roughly $15.8 billion in U.S. sales in 2025, about 18% of all U.S. social commerce, and the company says 54 million Americans have bought a product after watching a TikTok video.
