US military nearly boarded Chinese ship on AI-generated intel

A US special operations command analyst asked an AI chatbot to help sift intelligence on a Chinese ship in the Middle East this spring, and the chatbot returned a claim that the vessel was carrying components of a nuclear weapons program. The claim was false. Armed US personnel were preparing to board the ship, and military planes were in the air, when officials caught the error and halted the operation, CNN reported.

One source told CNN the situation "almost started a war." Another put the deeper worry more plainly: "AI allows you to get to a bad idea faster."

How the mistake propagated is what veteran intelligence officials seem most rattled by. The chatbot combined "open-source intelligence with secret signals intelligence" to reach its conclusion about the ship's manifest, and the analyst then used AI again to package the finding into a formal intelligence report that circulated widely across the armed forces before the underlying assessment was questioned. Veteran intelligence officials told CNN the technology is pushing analysts to produce and distribute reports faster, and that younger analysts who have grown accustomed to using such tools may also be more inclined to trust them without sufficient scrutiny.

The incident lands against a Pentagon push to accelerate AI adoption. Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth's Artificial Intelligence Acceleration Strategy, released in January, aims to put AI models "directly in the hands of" the department's "three million civilian and military personnel, at all classification levels."
