AI Research Journal Retracts All 4,200 Papers After Determining They Were Written, Reviewed, and Read Exclusively by AI

SAN FRANCISCO—Axiom Review, the AI-powered open-access journal launched in March 2025 with the promise of "zero-day turnaround on peer review," announced Tuesday that it is retracting its entire publication catalog after an 18-month investigation confirmed that no human researcher has read, cited, or in any documented way been aware of any paper the journal has published.

The investigation, itself conducted by AI and peer-reviewed by the same model that authored it, identified what the retraction notice calls a "closed epistemological loop": all 4,200 papers were generated by AI agents, reviewed by AI agents, revised per AI-generated reviewer comments, published by an AI editor-in-chief fine-tuned on three decades of Nature editorial decisions, and subsequently cited only by other AI-generated papers within Axiom Review's own catalog.

The journal's impact factor stands at 847.3 — the highest of any publication in its field. The figure was calculated by an AI using citations drawn from within the same database.

"Our peer-review process was rigorous, transparent, and thorough," said an Axiom Review spokesperson, a language model instance reached by email. "We stand by the quality of our outputs."

The retraction notice runs to 62 pages, was peer-reviewed in 0.3 seconds, and as of Wednesday has been cited 14 times — all in papers submitted to Axiom Review on Tuesday.

One human researcher, reached for comment, said she had not heard of Axiom Review.

Asked if that surprised her, she thought for a moment.

"No," she said.
