We placed a tracking device in a shipment of rare books to see which AI company was buying it, and found an Amazon facility where Amazon scans and destroys books.

AI Weekly's analysis
  • 404 Media hid an Apple AirTag in a roughly 1,000-book order sold on Biblio and followed it to an Amazon warehouse in Las Vegas.
  • The shipment terminated at Amazon's LAS8 site at 5801 Nicco Way, home to a team called VGT3 whose logo is a Tyrannosaurus rex clutching an open book.
  • Amazon told the outlet it 'purchases books through commercial channels'; the company classes its Nova family of models as 'frontier.'

The CEO of Anthropic A.I. predicted in April '26 that A.I. will eliminate 50% of white collar entry jobs and cause 10-20% unemployment in the next 5 years. Near Great Depression levels. But look at that stock market! Enjoy your lovely data center. www.axios.com/2025/05/28/a...

Ordinarily, I think it's a good thing when an 86-year-old doesn't know what ChatGPT is, but I feel like extremely influential members of Congress should probably be aware of this stuff. www.mediaite.com/online/jim-c...

Recent commentary

At the end of the term I asked my college creative wriing students to submit anonymous thoughts on AI. No real surprises: Mood ranges from resignation to despair, capitulation from embittered erosion of standards to total, feelings of betrayal from deep to furious. 1/

Learned today about a couple of radical left writers I admire who are all in for AI. Heartbreaking. Don't let this be you. AI is the great splintering machine.

I'm charged today with giving a short talk to 150 incoming college first-years. You know, welcome & encouragement & maybe a bit of "what college means now." I want to welcome them, & encourage them! But I feel I'd be dishonest if I didn't speak to the hour--white nationalism, AI, 1.5 celsius...

It boggles my mind that I have colleagues who insist they’d recognize AI work. This kind of denialism of a problem borders in scale if not importance on anti-vaxxerism.

Not having a solution isn't the same as there being no solution. Magical thinking--don't worry, AI will go bust; don't worry, it's not really that effective; don't worry, Trump's not popular--isn't a solution. I don't have any either! That doesn't mean they can't be found.

Here’s a happy thought: what if AI, made in the image of dweebs like Musk & Altman, decides that humanity is indeed unsalvageable… so instead of wasting a lot of effort murdering us all, it just blasts itself off to Mars? Dare to dream!

That David Ellison op-ed is so astonishingly tone deaf--"straight down the middle," the "range" of his interests represented by GI Joe, Top Gun, and Terminator: Dark Fate... I think his chatbot ghost writer really let him down.

If I had known Backrooms was about AI slop I think I would have passed. Enough of that IRL.
