I've spent months rethinking and rebuilding my programming languages course from scratch for the agentic coding era. I wrote myself a memo explaining what I'm doing. I figure others might be interested in the redesign, so here goes! Feedback welcome of course. docs.google.com/…

5/ We also have some (preliminary!) evidence that "if it types it runs", LLMs can infer semantics even w/out meaningful variable names, etc. THERE. ARE. A. LOT. OF. CAVEATS! Mostly posting this to inspire better research. All details are on arXiv: arxiv.org/abs/2606.01522

A lot of people forget, or aren't old enough to know, that Google has a track record of forcing things in where they don't belong. Just think of Google+. Whole stories have been written about its needless injection everywhere, until its eventual demise. www.theatlantic.com/tec…

Since subscribing to the @lrb.co.uk , for fun I've been reading all the old issues from the first on. This creates frissons when you find a review of a book that seems old and familiar but was then brand new. Here, for instance, is Lighthill on Gödel Escher Bach: www.lrb.co.uk…

Recent commentary

New research thread: 1/ Error messages have always been designed, sometimes painstakingly, for humans. But now we have new "readers" for errors: agentic AI. Should this affect what PLs generate? Can we measure this experimentally? We have some preliminary results: ↵

For a while programming looked most under AI threat, but suddenly mathematics has taken pole position. My theory for why is 2-fold: 1. Math has had 1000s of years to get to clean formulations. 2. Math is self-contained: no "network misconfigured", etc. to gum up the works. ↵

Reading Arvind Narayanan made me think: one of the great (and most undersung) achievements of the 20th century was rural electrification. If "AI is the new electricity", what is "rural AIification"? "Rural" here is obviously a metaphor, though it has some literal elements too.

0/ At the AIMCS (AI for Math and CS) workshop at FLoC 2026, @swarat.bsky.social ran a really fun panel on "How should the Formal Methods community respond to AI progress?" He put a lot of thought into very good questions, so here are my answers to them: ↵

Adding a new "how to build an agentic loop" assignment to my intro class, since it's the new metacircular interpreter for 2026.

What even are we doing here. I'm not even sure what the ask is. This company wants me to pay them to run an AI that is going to feed my soundbites to…who exactly? No need, my soundbites are available for free right here. (-:

The fact that Claude Code can do all kinds of agentic things but not *checks watch* check a watch will never not be funny.
