A few years ago, Georgios Yannakakis and I wrote an article about what to do as an AI researcher when a giant AI company steamrolls your research field. I just looked at it again and, well, it’s still relevant. ieeexplore.ieee.org/document/104...

Sneak peek: I implemented a 3 layer MLP that predicts the fashion MNIST dataset using SQL (with my own autograd impl inside the database). Apparently einsum notation is better expressed as a JOIN. github.com/xqlsystems/x...

  • The benchmark trains a 784→196→32→10 MLP on Fashion-MNIST with forward pass, backpropagation, and SGD all expressed as SQL queries.
  • A SKIP_ZERO_PIXELS flag drops background pixels via a WHERE clause and delivers roughly a 1.8x speedup on Fashion-MNIST.
  • Hyperparameters are demo-scale: 500 training samples, 200 test samples, learning rate 0.5, 60 steps, chunk size 250.

I spoke with The Daily about what’s happening to mathematics in the age of AI—and what it feels like to be a mathematician right now. The conversation went places I hadn’t expected. Thank you to Rachel Abrams, Annie Minoff, and their team. www.nytimes.com/2026/10/13/p...

Recent commentary

One thing that sucks about ai: we are getting more and more single author research papers and decreased collaboration because you can reasonably push out a good number of papers by collaborating with the ai instead of humans.

I'm giving a talk on correlation matrix filtering and downstream machine learning use cases next week, if you are curious about this topic, let me know and I will post a bunch of tweets once it's done.

anybody on here who uses multiple ai chat bots: which of them is more agreeable/disagreeable? I am spending more time using claude (past 2-3 weeks) and I find, at least in chats I've had with it, it is not overly focused on sounding agreeable at the cost of fixing my (il)logical reasoning/mistakes.

if you think ai is going in the wrong direction maybe you can work on those things which you believe would push the field in the right one. Instead of incessantly criticizing and complaining about everybody else doing work. Ship something and publish possible improvements.

openai dumping those 700 papers is identical to those data labeling "help us train ai models and we'll pay you between $50-$100/hr" firms except they're not even offering any money. It's lowkey disgusting. i've done data labeling in the pre-ml age for a google search contractor: it rots your brain.

I am cursed with new project ideas popping in my mind everyday which is made worse by the ai enabling my impulsive (even compulsive) behavior... 🥲

what I love and hate about ai is that this is basically a sort of complicated autoencoder/nonlinear pca except it's a foundation model:

With the creation of communities and group chats, I think the ML/AI communities on here will be better insulated from much of the vitriol on this platform from now on since those significantly improve privacy and moderation. Exciting stuff.

I didn't like "artificial intelligence scientist" as a moniker and I like "super intelligence scientist" even less

The way ai is changing software engineering you still test and evaluate engineers/researchers coding ability during hiring when in fact you don't want them to code in their day to day. Coding ability is getting worse not better, it's a bit hard to see this converging to anything positive long term?
