It’s interesting how the fascists are trying to preemptively securitize any *ideas* that are a threat to their power base and work backwards from them to construct the claim of an actual violent extremist threat, in this case anti-tech, but also anti-{American, Christian, capi…

  • Anthropic co-founder Chris Olah read an advance copy of Pope Leo XIV's first encyclical and told colleagues the company should pull out of the May 25 launch.
  • Olah's team privately lobbied the pope's advisers to take AI consciousness seriously; the 40,000-word Magnifica Humanitas kept its line that AI has 'no moral conscience.'
  • Since fall 2025, Anthropic has flown religious scholars from several traditions to its offices under NDAs to discuss whether Claude might be conscious.

Google changing Lake Ontario to Lake America while simultaneously forcing AI misinfo slop tools on to their customers is a good example of the way that fascism operates as a kind of MLM of alternately exercising and sucking up to authoritarian power.

One of the problems with the AI industry being run by apocalyptic millenarian cultists isn’t that their end of the world scenarios are made up; it’s that like other similar millennialists, they think their desired end of the world is a utopia and they’ll do whatever they can to make it real.

The critical perspective on counter-arguments about Google and GNIS is that a society organized around blindly following automation and treating any information that is extruded by an information system as de facto authoritative is exactly the problem that critical tech scholars are raising about AI

It is interesting how if you spend even a little amount of time using an LLM how easy it becomes to clock (most) LLM generated text and, especially, website designs. These things are caught in stylistic attractor basins and the homogeneity is telling once you see it.

The thing social media-driven social epistemologies, conspiracist make-believe, governance-by-propaganda, influencer alt-media, peer-on-peer surveillance, and AI-as-information-system all have in common is that they deny consensual participation in shared reality, which is inherently anti-democratic

As someone who started working on a citation management and information organizing software tool, seeing the widespread anti-software sentiment among researchers because they got baited into thinking Zotero has anything to do with AI (it doesn’t, it is literally 20 years old) is depressing.

We should interpret all of the various “the AI did it on its own”, “is AI conscious?”, and “AI is people, and therefore undeserving of rights just like (some) people are” style ideas as participatory make-believe in the fascist kayfabe play spirit, to build consensus for the end of human rights.

For all the talk about data-driven decision-making, data has always operated as a prop magic wand for people to suspend their disbelief for engaging in desire-driven decision-making, and AI has just shortened the engineering pipeline required to get to that end.

My only interest in the “is AI conscious?” debate is observing that cyberpunk and scifi stories apparently got it backwards how in our actual reality it was in the financial interests of the companies creating AI to convince everyone that it is conscious instead of suppressing or ignoring it
