Frontier Lab Hiring Safety Researcher; Notes Role Reports to Deputy VP, Model Launches

MENLO PARK—A leading artificial intelligence laboratory posted a senior safety researcher position Wednesday offering up to $420,000 in annual base compensation and a disclosure, embedded in the requirements section, that the successful candidate will have approximately eleven business days to evaluate each new model before its scheduled release date.

The listing describes the role as central to the lab's "safety-by-design philosophy" and asks applicants to support that philosophy "at speeds compatible with our release schedule," which the posting notes averages one new model every six to eight weeks.

Under a subheading titled "You Are Not Responsible For," the job posting clarifies that the safety researcher bears no accountability for model training decisions, launch timing, or any safety work conducted prior to their hire date. Model training, the listing specifies, is "typically completed before your review window opens."

The position reports to the Deputy VP of Model Launches.

Required qualifications include a PhD in machine learning, cognitive science, or philosophy; five or more years of safety research experience "ideally at a lab whose safety work you subsequently found insufficient"; and "comfort writing clearly about risks without causing concern among investors."

Compensation includes equity vesting over four years beginning six months after the start date. "This means you will have a financial interest in the company's continued operation for approximately four and a half years," the listing reads. "We thought you should know that."

The company described itself in the closing line as "committed to building safe AI for the long-term benefit of humanity, as we define it."

The position has been open since February. The model it was posted to review shipped in March.
